The concept of Afternoon Tea was first conceived by the Duchess of Bedford, Anna 7th, in the early 1800’s. Looking for a way to ward off the hunger pangs between lunch and dinner, the Duchess started having a tray of tea with bread and butter served to her in the mid afternoon. This became a regular occurrence and she began to invite other high society ladies to join her.
Taking tea soon became a good excuse for a social gathering, and so started a trend that is still very much a part of British life – and life at The Opera Rooms – to this day!
